Plum Blossom (Ume) Tea Bowl - Kyoto Ninsei Style
Ume, known in English as plum blossoms (though Japanese apricot would be a better translation), herald the arrival of spring in Japan. The flowers are a welcome sight after the deep cold of winter recedes.
Before cherry blossoms became the popular symbol of Japan and of spring, it was plum blossoms that the nobility eagerly awaited.
The delicate white and pink flowers symbolise good fortune, health, and vitality (they are vigorous enough to bloom while winter is not quite done). They are also considered talismans against evil spirits, and are representative of the god Tenjin. You will see groves of plum trees growing in most Tenmangu shrines.
Dimensions: w12.5cm x d12.5cm x h7.5cm
